Ñ PICTUREDECOMPRESS¬
This CD ROM contains every image pictured in the Background Series 12 printed catalog. Also included is a comprehensive image browsing utility called LIGHTBOX¬. This allows you to view the images on-screen and to perform searches by a number of different criteria.
Also included is an Adobe ACROBAT¬ file titled, QUICK START! This file lists PhotoDisc products, new releases, licensing and online information. Take a look. You'll like what you see.
You may access the images directly from the CD ROM within the PHOTOS folder. The low resolution TIFF files are found in the LO RES folder on Disc A and are ready for import into any popular graphic design or page layout application. The medium resolution images are found in the MED RES folder also on Disc A. The high resolution JPEG images are found in the HI RES folder on Disc B. JPEG images must be decompressed and then saved to your hard drive as a TIFF. The saved TIFF file can then be imported into other applications in the same fashion as a low resolution image.
Decompressing JPEG images:
Ñ If you own Adobe Photoshop 2.5 or newer, you can simply use the OPEN command under the file menu. The latest versions of Photoshop have a built-in JPEG decompression module that supports the JPEG file format. When prompted to select a file, you may open a JPEG file directly off the disc. Once decompressed, the image can be saved as a TIFF to your hard drive. The decompressed image will be approximately 10mb for the medium resolution and 28.5mb for the high resolution.
Ñ If you don't have a recent version of Adobe Photoshop or any other imaging software that supports the JPEG file format, you may use a stand-alone decompression utility called PICTUREDECOMPRESS¬ found in the UTILITIES folder. This program must be copied to your hard drive and requires a minimum of 20,000k of free RAM to decompress a 10mb file (To decompress the HI RES images, you will need approximtely 2-3 times the amount of memory). If your Macintosh does not have at least 20mb of free RAM you may need to allocate 20,000k of free disk space as Virtual Memory in your MEMORY Control Panel. JPEG files can then be opened using the OPEN command under the FILE menu and saved as a TIFF to your hard drive. You may now open the file in any imaging software that supports TIFF or PICT files. If your intended use is 150 LPI printed output, make sure that the decompressed MED or HI RES image is tagged at a resolution of 300 PPI before sending it to output.
Ñ Again, this is a 2 disc set. Disc A contains MED RES image files as well as a version of PICTUREDECOMPRESS¬. And Disc B contains HI RES image files and PICTUREDECOMPRESS¬.

READ ME FIRST! - This folder contains the READ ME!, an informational file and DOUBLE CLICK!, a splash screen containing examples of the latest Background Series.
QUICK START! - A tour of the major features of this CD-ROM and an overview of the latest PhotoDisc products, Licensing and Online information.
PHOTOS - Contains the browsing catalog, three versions of every image, PLUS the TILES and SEAMS folders.
BACKGROUNDS 12 CATALOG - This is a Lightbox Catalog that allows you to preview all of the images contained in this series. For further instructions, see the Lightbox Manual in the Lightbox folder.
LO RES - Contains all of the low resolution (5" x 7" @ 72 PPI) RGB TIFF images of BACKGROUND SERIES 12. These can be used for on screen viewing and comps.
MED RES - Contains all of the medium resolution (5" x 7" @ 300 PPI) JPEG compressed RGB TIFF images of BACKGROUND SERIES 12. These files may be used for high quality 4 color printing.
HI RES - Contains all of the high resolution (8.5" x 13" @ 300 PPI) JPEG compressed RGB TIFF images of BACKGROUND SERIES 12. You will find the HI RES image folder contained on Disc B. These files may also be used for high quality 4 color printing.
TILES - This folder contains four items: The TILES folder containing wrap around tiles that can be used for multi media backgrounds, web design, etc., and the SEAMS folder, containing seamless backgrounds composed of the TILE images. Also in this folder are the ReadMe-Seamless file, and the Seamless Tiles catalog.
SEAMLESS TILES catalog - This is a Lightbox catalog that contains all the images in the SEAMS folder. They are 640 x 480 pixel examples of how the tiles can be used.

LIGHTBOX - The Lightbox application for the Macintosh allows the user to browse and search through the 100 images available on this disc. To view Background Series 12 thumbnails double-click on the BACKGROUNDS 12 CATALOG icon.
You may run the BACKGROUNDS 12 CATALOG directly from the CD but it will run more efficiently if the Lightbox application and the BACKGROUNDS 12 CATALOG are copied to your hard drive. The application will run only if Quicktime¬ is installed in the System Folder. Simply drag and drop the Quicktime¬ icon on to the closed System Folder and restart your computer. If your computer currently has Quicktime installed, you need not install the copy found on this disc.
*NOTE: Most Macintosh computers already have a version of Quicktime¬ installed. We recommend using either Quicktime¬ 2.0 or 2.1 (2.0 is supplied on this CD). There is a known conflict with Quicktime¬ 2.5 and the LightBox application. To identify which version you are running go to your Extensions Folder located in the System Folder, select the Quicktime¬ extension, go to File and "Get Info╔". This will display the version number. If you are running Quicktime¬ 2.5, enlarge the catalog window to the full dimension of the monitor screen and allow the LightBox Catalog to redraw the screen, this will force the images to reappear.
This folder also contains reference material in MS Word 4.0 and SIMPLETEXT format for the Lightbox browsing application.
ADOBE ACROBAT - This folder contains the Acrobat Reader installer sotware and a ReadMe file on installation.
MORE INFO - This folder contains three helpful text files. They are OUTPUT INSTRUCTIONS, COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, and GLOSSARY OF TERMS. These files are provided for technical reference. UTILITIES - This folder contains PICTUREDECOMPRESS, SIMPLETEXT, and ADOBE PHOTOSHOP TRYOUT. The tryout version of Photoshop is included as a demo only. Files can not be saved or printed with this version.
TEXTFILE - Contains a text file which lists Filename, Title, Credits, Information and Keywords for each BACKGROUND SERIES 12 image.
